Aarvaks - A Berkeley Original
The story of Aarvaks started with John Toivonen, a recent immigrant to Berkeley from Finland. During the building boom that followed the 1923 Berkeley Hills fire, John saw an opportunity to install the latest heating systems in residential homes. He specialized in replacing old, coal-burning systems with natural gas, a cleaner, more comfortable way to heat a home.
Just starting out, his business was not immune to the Great Depression and John worked hard to sell his services. A good natured fellow with a sense of humor, one of his favorite things to do was to walk on his hands from door to door, even up porch steps to ask for business saying aarvaks, a Finnish slang word for "guess who?".

With an eye to the future
Since our beginning we have been a proponent of the cleanest-burning and highest efficiency heating and air conditioning equipment available. Our goal has always been to provide the best personal comfort with greater energy efficiency while reducing your home’s carbon footprint and lowering your energy costs.
As a green conscious company, we strive to recycle the majority of old materials removed from job sites including metal, refrigerant, paper, cardboard, and wood. In addition, some of our service trucks run on recycled vegetable oil.

Jason Hanson, owner of Aarvaks Heating, brings over 20 years of experience in installations, system customization, and a deep understanding of the Bay Area, where he calls home. He believes in putting community and family first, keeping it local in a world where corporations are taking over family businesses. Jason combines efficiency with aesthetics, ensuring every project not only works perfectly but looks great—all while doing what’s right for the client and the environment. With a deep commitment to exceptional customer service, he personally oversees every project to guarantee expertise, care, and attention to detail.
